a.i. Community Outreach - Earth Day

Earth Day, (Tuesday April 22nd), has arrived! Test your knowledge of the 3rd planet from the Sun with the Mother Earth Quiz.

Please see the Going Green a.i. presentation given in Lanham on Thursday March 27th, 2008, which will familiarize you with an array of environmental topics (i.e., Thinking green in our daily lives, global warming, carbon footprints, greener eating, recycling and electronic waste, etc.).

Below are 10 Earth-Friendly Things you can do today and information about Volunteer Activities (Tree-planting & Oyster Restoration) this Sunday April 27th.

10 Earth-Friendly Things You Can Do to Make a Difference:

  1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
    - At the Lanham office, Aluminum and Plastic recycling are now available.
    - Paper and cardboard recycling are on its way.
  2. Bring your own Reusable Coffee mug, Water cup/bottle, Utensils
  3. Plants!
    - Bring a plant into your office to beautify and improve air quality.
    - Plant an organic (i.e., free of pesticide and chemical fertilizers) garden at home.
  4. Start a Compost Heap
    - Reduces needless garbage. It makes wonderful nutrient-rich soil for those plants in item #3
  5. Wash in Cold
    - Washing dishes and clothes in cold water helps save energy (CO2 emissions) that it takes to heat up the water.
  6. Turn off the lights
    - Try to rely on natural light if available.
  7. Reduce the amount of paper you print out (If you do, try to print double-sided and single-spaced)
  8. Use Natural Cleaning products at Home (Safer for your family and the environment)
  9. Use Reusable Shopping bags (Say No to paper or plastic and bring your own tote)
  10. Keep your Car Tires properly inflated (Check pressure before hitting the road when the tires are cold)
    - This improves gas mileage; tires will last longer and are safer; reduces pollution.

Delegate Lawton was a champion of Maryland’s environment and worked tirelessly to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. Partners include the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC). This is a great opportunity to help create habitat for fish, plants, and oysters without even getting your feet wet!
We will be building reef balls, which are igloo-like structures made of concrete and vary in size. These structures are set on the bottom of the bay as an artificial reef to provide habitat and thus creating an artificial reef.
